Housed in the museum, over 38,000 objects are on display. Originally, the Louvre Palace was built as a fortress, then later expanded and converted to kings residence. In 2013-09-04 15.13.511682, Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles as the location of his court, leaving the Louvre to be used for displaying the Royal Collection. It was during the French revolution that the National Assembly decreed the Louvre should be a museum.

It opened on 10 August 1793.

Needing expansion and repairs, the museum has gone through many changes, The Louvre Pyramid was designed during one of these renovation projects and was completed in 1989.
